Shimmin Back In The Hoops

Dominic Shimmin will be wearing blue and white hoops this evening as he plays for Morton against Stranraer in the CIS Insurance Cup.

Shimmin who had three ill fated years with R`s plagued by injuries and misfortune was on trial with Morton`s rivals, St. Mirren, a move which manager Davie Irons was surprised didn`t go through.

"We`re hoping we can get the business done today in time for him to play tonight," said Irons

"It would be a big signing. He played for us in pre-season but, with his background at Arsenal and QPR, we didn`t think it possible that he would come to us. He moved on to our friends up the road (St Mirren) for a trial but, for whatever reasons, that hasn`t worked out."

Shimmin, who signed for the R`s from Arsenal along with full back Matthew Hislop back in March 2005. During his time with Rangers he made only three league appearances, most recently the last game of the 2006/07 season against Stoke City.

Since then he went out on loan to AFC Bournemouth, but was hastily returned following his reported refusal to play in a minor county competition. Following his release from QPR in December 2007, he was picked up by Crawley, but moved on quickly once more. Irons is hopeful that the 20 year old defender will be available for selection this evening,

"Our reports on him have been very, very good. Hopefully we`ll have him in time to play tonight."

Morton play in blue and white hoops and ply their trade in the Scottish First Division, narrowly avoiding a relegation spot last season finishing in eighth.
