Gorkšs Plays In Bore Draw

QPR defender Kaspars Gorkšs played a full 90 minutes as Latvia played out a draw with Armenia in Cyprus.

Gorkšs was joined at the heart of defence by Liepajas metalurgs defender Deniss Ivanovs as the Latvian national side underachieved in a disappointing draw against the side ranked 112th in the Fifa world rankings.

Armenia had many opportunities to break the deadlock against their more illustrious opponents but were snuffed out by an excellent defensive unit.

Coach Aleksandrs Starkovs said: 'I think all the players played well but still I think that it won't be enough if we want to win next qualifying match in Luxembourg.

"Today goalkeeper Andris Vanins was good - I think he is the best player in our team this moment. He had many job in 2nd half.

"Our defence played well in the first half but in the second half we were tired physically. In these games someone needs to take initiative - in some matches Kaspars Gorkšs took it, in some Vitālijs Astafjevs but today it was Vanins.'

That was Gorkss` 23rd appearance for the national side, but that is pale in comparison to former Bristol Rover midfielder Vitālijs Astafjevs who became the second highest capped player in Europe with 151 caps, surpassing Germany`s Lothar Matthäus after today`s fixture.
