Gorkšs Still Believes

Kaspars Gorkšs spoke to Latvian television about QPR prior to his side`s clash with Luxembourg last night.

Gorkšs has cemented his place in the R`s defensive unit after a brief spell in the wilderness under Iain Dowie. Paulo Sousa`s appointment marked a turn in fortune for the Latvian central defender as he has become a first team regular under the Portuguese boss.

Speaking to LTV7 before kick off in his side`s crucial World Cup Qualifying tie against Luxembourg, Gorkšs explains his disappointment at Rangers season - but indicates the side still harbour playoff ambition.

He said: 'Until now season in England for my team is not so good but we still have a chance to get in play-offs and we will do everything to achieve this. If we struggle to do this, we will try to get in Premier League next season.

"We feel some pressure from management because big money is invested and squad is very good. Also fans want us to get good results. I said before the season that we will get in play-offs and I still think that."

As previously mentioned Gorkšs came to the club in a period of transition and found himself on the sidelines under Iain Dowie`s regime. This hadn`t given him the opportunity to display the goalscoring prowess that earned him a reputation at Blackpool.

However the solid defender believes that the two sides are a distance apart in terms of ambition and Rangers hold his best chance to fulfil a burning ambition - to play in the Premier League.

He said: "I hope that I will score this season. I had unsuccessful timing in transfer from Blackpool to QPR because it was in off season - I didn't get normal training, just some running."

"It is as day against night - QPR level is much, much higher in every aspect and also clubs' invested money and demands are higher."

Gorkšs helped Latvia to back to back wins against Luxembourg as they followed up a 4-0 away win on Saturday with a 2-0 win in Riga yesterday (Wednesday).

Goals from midfielder Juris Zigajevs and Celta Vigo forward Māris Verpakovskis took Latvia to victory on this occasion, with Gorkšs remaining hopeful of World Cup Qualification.

'Latvia is thinking about big achievements, not only outplaying Luxembourg," said Gorkss.

"We have that big aim, although none of us is looking in table and there is no reason to do that. But it would be nice still to have chances after next two games. It would be sad if everything would be finished after that.'

International News: Heidar Helguson played the entire 90 minutes in Iceland`s defeat against Scotland at Hampden Park.

The R`s forward who hadn`t been anticipated to play brought a succession of good saves from Sunderland stopper Craig Gordon, as he seems unable to find the back of the net for club or country.

Damien Delaney and Liam Miller were named as unused substitutes as the Republic of Ireland snatched a last gasp equaliser against Italy, courtesy of Spurs forward Robbie Keane.

Adel Taarabt scored the decisive goal in a friendly as Morocco defeated Angola 1-0.

The Rangers loanee capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put the ball home with consumate ease.
