Alan Shearer spoke highly of former QPR boss Iain Dowie in his press conference as new manager of Newcastle United.

Speaking before the country`s most prominent journalists Shearer admitted that he wouldn`t have done it for any other club, and in Dowie he has an able assistant with the correct experience.

"I felt it was very important to give it a bit of a fresh face," said Shearer

"They agreed to let me bring Iain in, which is not so much a pretty face but a fresh one.

"Iain has been in this situation before position before, he`s been in a relegation dog fight and has real character, and it`s important that he`s sitting beside me.

"I have got someone with experience if he thinks I`m doing the wrong thing he`ll tell me, he`s big enough and strong enough to let me know."

Shearer and Dowie took training this morning and are relishing the opportunity to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Dowie said: "Alan said to me what he wanted.

"The fact of the matter is that we`ll have very frank discussions and Alan will choose the team, and we`ll look back at it."

"There was a sign that this was a fresh dawn and I`m very much looking forward to it."

Their task will begin this weekend as Newcastle face Chelsea on Saturday April 4 with a view to picking up their first maximum in front of the Geordie faithful.
