Delaney Misses Out

Damien Delaney has been omitted from the Ireland squad to face Nigeria in a friendly but there is better news for Liam Miller.

The QPR full back has been in the fringes of the Eire squad despite impressing in the left-back region in the early stages of Giovanni Trapattoni`s reign.

Since then he has failed to appear in the green shirt with Kevin Kilbane the preferred option at full back.

This latest set-back may not be such a bitter pill to swallow for the Cork-born defender as it is only a friendly and he dodges the bullet of having to play at Craven Cottage.

Liam Miller has got a call up to the squad as he remains in limbo at QPR following the expiration of his contract. Newspaper reports had suggested he has been training with Cork City with a view to finding a new club.

The Ireland squad is as follows:

Shay Given (Manchester City)
Dean Kiely (West Bromwich Albion)
Keiren Westwood (Coventry City)
Eddie Nolan (Preston North End)
Sean St. Ledger (Preston North End)
John O'Shea (Manchester United)
Kevin Foley (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Paul McShane (Sunderland)
Richard Dunne (Manchester City)
Stephen Kelly (Birmingham City)
Kevin Kilbane (Hull City)
Aiden McGeady (Celtic)
Damien Duff (Newcastle United)
Darron Gibson (Manchester United)
Glenn Whelan (Stoke City)
Keith Andrews (Blackburn Rovers)
Liam Miller (Queens Park Rangers
Stephen Hunt (Reading)
Andy Keogh (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Liam Lawrence (Stoke City)
Caleb Folan (Hull City)
Kevin Doyle (Reading)
Robbie Keane (Tottenham Hotspur)
Shane Long (Reading)
Leon Best (Coventry City)

Interesting if that is based on performances or trying things out, he hasn't had a good season, and I hope he is given some freedom next season within reason to get down that flank again. We play with two holding midfielders for crying out loud can't one cover so Damien can bustle forward!

Damien missed out but Miller made it? Really? ... But I do agree with you that we need a defensive midfielder to cover Delany and let him run forward.

I thought Damien and the team suffered because he was held back, Cookie was isolated and forced to come inside the whole time. We looked so good last season when Damien got forward and supported the winger.
Boxer
I think his natural position was a winger. Every time I saw him play before he came to us he was on the left wing and he did a decent job there. He is naturally attacking and someone should realise they need to cover him.
