Former QPR defender Andrew Howell has signed for Conference South side Braintree Town.

The 20-year-old full back had been plying his trade for Tooting and Mitcham in the Ryman Premier League where he won the accollade of Player of the Year,

The defender who was released from Queens Park Rangers back in 2007 has now made the move to Cressing Road and manager Robbie Garvey is delighted with the capture.

He said: "We have been chasing him for quite a while now.

"I have a lot of time for Billy Smith and have known him for around 20 years.

"Andrew is a player he did not want to lose - he was Tooting`s player of the year last season in the Ryman League.

"He played for QPR`s first team when he was 17 and he can play at either left-back or in left-midfield.

"He also lives locally, in Dunmow, which is another bonus."

After beginning his career at Norwich City, Howell made the move to QPR and made his first team debut against Northampton Town in a League Cup victory at Loftus Road.

He also skippered the QPR under 18 side that were victorious in the Puma Youth Alliance League.
