The big story in the Serie A at the weekend was the departure of Sao Paulo coach Mauricy ahead of the classico against Corinthians, paying the penalty of a poor start to the season and the surprise 2-0 loss to Cruzeiro in the midweek Libertadores game which saw Sao Paulo exit the competition.
As much as I dislike the guy you don`t win three consecutive titles if you are a bad coach. A bad week for the men from the Morumbi ended in a 3-1 defeat to a Corinthians side buoyed by the midweek Cup Final first leg win over Internacional.
The Saturday games were a tale of late, late goals. Keirrison spared the blushes of Palmeiras at lowly Parana with a goal 4 minutes into added on time, Vitoria beat Botafogo thanks to a last minute goal from Apodi.
Santo Andre notched their first win of the season with a controversial winner 3 minutes into time added on to send Sport home empty handed, while Maxi Lopez rescued a point for Gremio with a header 2 minutes into stoppage time.
The late goals continued at Avai where Leo Gago secured all 3 points against Fluminense with a goal 2 minutes into stoppage time. In the other Saturday game Curitiba picked up their first win of the season winning 1-0 at Nautico.
On Sunday, leaders Atletico MG trailed 1-0 at half time but 3 goals in 15 minutes were enough to see off Santos. Adriano put his personal problems behind him with a hat trick as Flamengo put 4 past a hapless Internacional.
Cruzeiro started where they left off in the Libertadores at Sao Paulo in midweek scoring against Barueri inside 2 minutes but the Sao Paulo men went into the half time break level, and secured a surprise away win with 2 second half goals.
In our prediction league the late goals by Santo Andre and Gremio certainly affected the scores. Those 2 goals secured 5 points in both games for Toboboly to give him the lead with 13 points, but cost Clonmany a 5 pointer and the outright lead.
Flavio B came up trumps with getting the Curitiba away win spot on, while Lenny proved that local knowledge isn`t always a bonus. Meanwhile at the bottom, or Lanterna as we say in Brasil, is Boxer, but its early days yet.
