'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Summer Prediction League - News

The big event in Brasilian football over the weekend was the Confederations Cup Final victory over the USA, although this did not affect an entertaining round of league fixtures.

Corinthians took their eyes off of the league and sent a reserve team to Paranaense ahead of Wednesdays cup final against Inter and were unsurprisingly beaten. Sao Paulo returned to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over a Nautico team who are rapidly falling down the table. Cruzeiro needed a penalty to beat a spirited Avai who remain rooted in the relegation places. Botafogo sit in bottom place following a 4-1 thumping at home by Goias. The remaining Saturday game was a cracker, with Barueri racing into a 2-0 lead against league leaders Atletico MG only for the visitors to draw level through 2 Tardelli penalties in 5 minutes. A manic final ten minutes saw 2 Atletico players head for an early bath and two goals in a minute see Barueri take all 3 points and move into the top 4.

Sundays league programme saw 41,000 watch the game of the weekend as Fluminense battered Flamengo at the maracana in the awaited duel between the Fred and Adriano. However neither striker shone in a game dominated by two strong defences that petered out into a 0-0 draw.

Elsewhere, Internacional warmed up for their Cup Final clash with Corinthians by beating Curitiba thanks to a Boalaos hat trick. Vitoria struggled against visitors Santo Andre until a 3 goal spurt in the final 10 minutes, and Gremio were looking good having levelled after trailing 1-0 at Sport, until scorer Jonas saw red and 2 goals in the final 5 minutes saw the hosts record a much needed win.

In the final game of the weekend Palmeiras entertained Santos having sacked coach Luxembourgo late on Friday evening as yet another coach paid the price for not getting past the quarter finals of the Libertadores. Add to that the bad feeling following the game in the Paulista State Championship which saw Santos substitute Domingunhos put on purely to get Souza of Palmeiras sent off, and then add the news that local hero Kerrirson is headed to Barcelona, and it is easy to see that the 1-1 draw did not go down too well with the Palmeiras faithful.

In our prediction league Toboboly once again proved his expertise scoring 17 points. Boxer has obviously been scouring the Brasilian websites as he came in second with 15.
Flavio B returned another solid 14 and Lee Cook Fan marked his debut in the competition with 11 points. Lenny obviously followed the Corinthians example and came in last with 10 points.

Overall Toboboly and Flavio B continue to lead the way while Boxer leaves the foot of the table to move up into third.
