Gareth Ainsworth has been praised by pundit and former team-mate Robbie Earle as speculation links him with the vacant assistant manager`s post at Port Vale.
Micky Adams has recently taken the helm at Vale Park and speculation has intensified in recent times that Vale hero Gareth Ainsworth could be linked with a return.
Speaking to Stoke based newspaper The Sentinel Earle had words of praise for his former Wimbledon team-mate.
"I was a little surprised he wasn't among the contenders for the manager's position, having done a good job at QPR," said Robbie.
"As a player, Gareth always gave the impression that football wasn't his whole life so, although he was a good professional, I didn't have him down as a certainty to go into management.
"But he's got excellent experience at Loftus Road so will make someone a good coach even, as is looking more likely, he doesn't end up at Vale Park."
The recent shake-up in Rangers back-room gave no mention to the future of Gareth Ainsworth with David Rouse and John Gorman proving able assistants to Jim Magilton.
It is my belief that Gareth should pursue a playing career while he remains at the top of his game, at Port Vale he would be given the opportunity to do this.
Ainsworth has the rest of his life to be a coach, but players as good and as committed as Ainsworth are a rare-commodity and to see his career stifled for an extra season of coaching would be a loss to football.
