Watson Deal Rekindled?

Vital QPR - Breaking News

Reports today suggest that Ben Watson is on the verge of departing Wigan Athletic with QPR one of three Championship clubs vying for the midfielder.

The Daily Mail have the story today that Ben Watson is eyeing a move away from the DW Stadium after not figuring in new boss Roberto Martinez`s plans.

Cardiff City are the favourites for the 24-year-old midfielder with QPR and Middlesbrough also competing for his signature.

Steve Bruce signed Watson in a £2m deal in January and there were initial signs that this was a shrewd deal, as he scored two goals in the latter stages of last season.

A new manager with new ideas, Martinez has opted to stamp his own authority on the side and for the time being Watson doesn`t appear to have a Latics future.

Cardiff`s interest is made more perplexing by their signing of Manchester City midfielder Kelvin Etutu, and it remains to be seen whether they are seeking to bolster their midfield further.

In reference to our conversation about midfielders earlier then I think he would be a good player to bring in - I'd consider £2m for him certainly.
Boxer
Boxer, last year you said Wigan paid over the odds when they paid £2m for him. I would make him vice captain behind Rowlands but play him more than Rowlands.
LeeCookFan
I did say that, taking into account the length of his deal at Palace, in his final year I believe, they paid over the odds there. Do you think the fact he's unsettled will lower the price, if so that'd be useful! But like Clonmany has mentioned, why would he join us in truth??
Boxer
Well I value him based on what he can bring to the club. He can bring as much today as he could have in Jan making him worth the same in my eyes.
LeeCookFan
This is true, but when you've got owners of our calibre you have to think in terms of value - they're always bound to drive a hard bargain and reality states that you won't pay as much for a player in the final year of their contract, unless you're desperate - We evidently weren't OR maybe he didn't want to come?
Boxer
Oh grab him quick ! I'll be gutted if one of our rivals get him first. He's the sort of quality we need !!!

Do we really need another midfielder?? And weren't all of those above critical of calls to spend millions on new players very recently???

It's like the Tommy Smith scenario again, quality player but is there a place for him?
