'No Clear Proof Against Briatore'

Flavio Briatore's indefinite ban from Formula One has been questioned by a member of the FIA's world motor sport council.

Head of Spanish Motor Sport, Carlos Gracia has come out in defence of Flavio Briatore, believing the punishment was severe in light of the lack of evidence.

He told Spanish newspaper AS: 'Briatore's [penalty] seems to me excessive, there was no clear proof against him and he was not able to defend himself either,'

'Morever, I wouldn't rule out him going to ordinary justice because he has been left without his means of earning a living.'

Briatore's ban has threatened his position as co-owner of Queens Park Rangers and chairman of QPR Holdings, but the sticking point lies in the wording of the FIA Statement.

There is no particular wording to intimate it is a lifetime ban, which is why chairman of the Football League, Lord Mawhinney, has written to the FIA for further details.

Briatore is said to be back in Italy, 'distraught' with the decision as quoted in the Gazzetta Dello Sport. He is now considering legal action over the ruling.
