Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney has announced his decision to retire next year.

At a league meeting in Preston today Lord Mawhinney set March 15 2010 as a date for his retirement and informed the board of his decision today.

Mawhinney, who has spent more than seven years in the role, made the following statement today.

He said: 'It has been a privilege to serve The Football League. I have greatly enjoyed the challenge of helping to shape a better League and I am grateful for all the support that I have received.

'This timetable will give my successor the opportunity to develop League policy for the 2010/11 season.'

Whether this affects who will chair the Flavio Briatore`s hearing remains to be seen, depending on the duration of his legal action against the FIA.

Nevertheless Ian Richie will oversee the appointment of a new chairman under consultation with Football League clubs.
