Hart-felt Aims For QPR

Paul Hart spoke to QPRPlayer yesterday after taking his first training session as the Rs` new gaffer. He talked frankly about his plans for the immediate future and how there was a clean slate for everyone now he was in charge.

His opening remarks, on the speed with which his appointment was made, were coupled with his evident delight at being appointed:

"To say that I`m delighted is an understatement. It is a great Club with great traditions; and I am hoping that I can justify my position by playing the way Queen`s Park Rangers are used to playing and want to play."

Hart believes that our traditions agree with his own principles, something he believes is very important. Hart is very good friends with our own Don Masson and he talked about the days of the Rs` under Dave Sexton, "a magnificent coach who I admired greatly". He saw Rodney Marsh play for Rangers back in the day: "the players that they`ve produced, the sort of football that they played, even going back to Rodney Marsh, when I first glimpsed him back in the '60s, enthused me and played a big part in forming the way I go about my job."

Hart watched our game against West Bromwich Albion on Sky TV on Monday night. He felt we had done very well and he sensed "a great spirit and was very pleased with what I saw."

Talk turned to the immediate task in hand. "I`ve got to very quickly assess the players and find a winning formula. I believe, I said to the players this morning, that result last week gave us a bit of a platform for us to strike for the play-offs and I think we`ve got to aim for that."

Hart was very keen to stress that all players would be given a fair crack of the whip - those at training and those out on loan. "We need to have as many good players around us as we can have," he added.

Hart spoke to players on an individual basis yesterday during the training session. Hart`s attitude towards his new charges seems, if what has come out about Magilton`s man-management or lack of is to be believed, is noticeably different. He wants to get to know the man behind the footballer - not just work with each player merely as a footballer: "We have to have a relationship. It`s not 'you do this` and 'if you don`t do this`. It`s not like that. Certainly, I think managing like that is a little bit archaic. I like to get to know the players and they need to get to know me. They need to know what prickles me and what excites me. And we have to develop a trust and that`s how we move forward."

Contrary to original rumours, Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham are not in charge of the team tomorrow at home to Sheffield United. Paul Hart, together with his Assistant Manager, Mick Harford, are in full charge. Hart met all members of the QPR staff yesterday, who he found supportive and helpful. "I think that, if we can carry that on, with the players` responses and all that, it`s going to be difficult to keep us down. We look like we are going to be a tight group who can develop the football club. In the next few months I hope it`s going to pay dividends."

Hart would love to win promotion: "I don`t think you can click your fingers and hope it`s going to happen. There`s got to be a way of doing it. But I think if we can get into these play-off positions by the New Year, then I have a feeling that, and I`ve always had this feeling that once you are in the play-off positions, half-way point or beyond, then it`s difficult to come out of them so I really hope we can make a push for it."

Positive thoughts from the new man at the helm and I am sure we all wish Paul Hart and Mick Harford all the very best over the next few months as they try to do what their predecessors have failed to do - get us into, and keep us in, the play-offs! A win tomorrow against Sheffield United would be a wonderful start on that road, now wouldn`t it?!
