Queens Park Rangers defender Kaspars Gorkšs has been voted as Footballer of the Year by the Latvian Football Federation.

The international centre-back played a key role in Latvia's positive qualifying campaign that saw Aleksandrs Starkovs' men run Switzerland and Greece close.

This will undoubtedly stand them in better stead in terms of seeding for the European Championship Qualifiers.

The QPR man was voted as 'Footballer of the Year' 2009 by the Latvian Football Federation for his form for both club and country over the last year.

On top of this he is also a nominee for the Best Latvian Athlete of the Year 2009, owing to his performances for the national side, whom he captained once.
