Plymouth Relegated

Plymouth Argyle have become the second side to be relegated from the Championship as Newcastle United took the Championship title.

Safety from my perspective has been tainted by personal sentiment as our promotion buddies Plymouth Argyle had their League One status confirmed next season.

The Pilgrims and Rangers have had close ties since Rangers applauded the Division Two Champions at Home Park, and in return the R's got a good cheer when their Hillsborough score-line flashed up on the final day.

Since then the two sides have seen the peaks and troths of the second-tier, with Ian Holloway managing both clubs and Ákos Buzsáky, Chris Barker and Simon Walton moving between the clubs.

It was hard therefore not to feel some sort of affiliation with the Green Army as they fell short in their final bid for survival, but something heart-warming did emanate from Home Park.

In a week where sport has made the headlines for the right reasons, with golfer Brian Davis calling a two shot penalty on himself, Plymouth gave champions Newcastle the respect they deserved.

Not only did the majority of the Green Army stay behind to applaud the run-away Champions - but they allowed them to have their celebration with a medley of Geordie Anthems.

It was a nice moment for football to see so many staying behind and no doubt feeling between the two clubs has been enhanced following last night's ultimately disappointing game from a Plymouth perspective.

Sadly both they and Peterborough will be playing League One football next season - but if only for my selfish enjoyment of the South West in summertime may they make a swift return.
