The Men in Black - Portsmouth v QPR

Gavin Ward from Surrey will take charge Rangers away trip to Portsmouth this Tuesday.

Having run the line during his early career, Mr Ward joined the National List of Referees in 2007 and has now had a year's experience taking charge of league clashes.

His major controversy was abandoning Plymouth v Barnsley with the Tykes 4-1 up at Home Park - citing player safety as the reason for calling the players off.

He has taken charge of QPR just the once before and will be remember for what was a disappointing display as Rangers lost out to Reading.

At Fratton Park he will be assisted by Harry Lennard (East Sussex) and Mark Pottage (Somerset), with the fourth official Warren Atkin (West Sussex)

Thus far this season Mr Ward has taken charge of 11 games this season, dishing out 23 yellows- giving him an average of 2.09 cards per game.

Refereeing Rangers

The one game that Mr Ward presided over for QPR was an uninspiring defeat against Reading. The referee's poor performance compounded the defeat as he gave Damion Stewart his marching orders for two highly dubious bookings.

One humourous moment came as Matt Mills stuck his finger up at the Reading crowd for jeering one too many wayward long passes. Typically enough against the Royals it was decided from the spot as Gylfi Sigurdsson struck for the hosts.

Mr Ward & Queens Park Rangers

Reading 1-0 QPR - 16-03-2010
Goals: Gylfi Sigurdsson 85pen
Yellow Cards: Grzegorz Rasiak; Matt Connolly, Alejandro Faurlín, Matt Hill, Mikele Leigertwood, Damion Steward
Sent Off: Damion Stewart
