The Men in Black - QPR v Newcastle United

Phil Dowd will take charge of this Monday's televised clash between Queens Park Rangers and Newcastle United.

The experience official joined the National List of Referees in 1997 before being called up to the Select List in 2001 - where he has resided ever since.

He will be assisted by Mr Simon Long (Suffolk) and Mr Richard West (Yorkshire) with Andy D'Urso (Essex) the fourth official at Loftus Road.

This season, Dowd has dished out a stunning 24 cards in four games, giving him an average of six cards per game.

Refereeing Rangers

Dowd's first match taking charge of QPR was the away defeat to Tranmere Rovers in 1999. Despite going in front twice through Danny Maddix and Keith Rowland, long throw merchant Dave Challinor, Lee Jones and Graham Allen securing the win for Tranmere.

The reverse fixture the following season proved more fruitful for the R's despite a Clint Hill goal for the visiting side. Rangers netted through Rob Steiner and Gavin Peacock as Rangers were triumphant second time around.

The following season, Dowd took charge of the West London derby between QPR and Fulham. Fulham took all three points at Loftus Road with Peter Moller and Karlheinz Riedle and took the bragging rights back down the road.

Four years later Dowd was back taking charge of Rangers once more - initially overseeing a controversial affair against Leicester City. Disallowing two QPR goals, Dowd then gave a dubious penalty that David Connolly duly dispatched.

Later that season he oversaw Rangers take the lead against soon to be promoted Sunderland. Dan Shittu opened the scoring before Andy Welsh, Chris Brown and Julio Arca capitalised on the R's more attacking tendencies.

In November 2006, John Gregory's relegation-threatened Rangers took apart Crystal Palace in a memorable Loftus Road encounter. Tom Soares and Clinton Morrison sandwiched a Jimmy Smith effort before Smith hit a brace along with Kevin Gallen and Steve Lomas getting in on the act.

Later that campaign Rangers lost out against Norwich City, with Dion Dublin the solitary scorer for the Canaries, as before two men were booked as Dowd was establishing himself as a bit of a card merchant stepping down from the top flight.

Rangers' 2008 Carling Cup adventure took them past Aston Villa and on to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. Peter Ramage brought down Danny Welbeck, allowing Carlos Tevez to slot home from the spot for the only goal of the game.

It was the final fixture that Dowd refereed involving QPR in a long, established refereeing career in the top flight.
