Sir Alex Hopeful Of 'Stupid Result'

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes that something 'stupid' will happen at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

The Manchester United boss has been forced to all-but concede the title race in recent weeks with their city rivals Manchester City, clawing back a significant deficit to draw level on points and make themselves favourites on the final day.

All the noises from Old Trafford is that they need QPR to do them a big favour, though that is being quite dismissive of their opponents on Sunday, Sunderland.

He told the gathered media: 'We can only do our best and try to win the match and hope something stupid happens with City.

'The attitude will be that City have to win but it's an enormous challenge for them too.

'The disappointment of losing the game would be unbelievable. It's untold what effect it could have on them.'

Ferguson compared Rangers' sizeable task to that of his Aberdeen side beating Real Madrid in a European Final - while it won't be easy by any stretch, Ferguson has stated that it's not unthinkable.

He continued: 'That's QPR's challenge, to do an Aberdeen.

'Of course, the odds are stacked against them. City are in good form and at home. It will not be easy for them because the pressure on them will be enormous, the fans will be putting the referee under tremendous pressure.

'It's not going to be easy because you expect City to win. But, as long as human beings are human beings, you never know. You just hope something stupid happens.'

On a dramatic final day QPR require a solitary point to make certain their Premier League safety - unless Bolton Wanderers fail to win at Stoke City, which would hand Rangers safety by default.
