Barton Slapped With Sizeable Ban

Joey Barton has will miss nearly a third of the 2012-13 campaign as the FA slaps him with a huge suspension.

The QPR captain was dismissed for the second time on the final day of the season when he elbowed Manchester City front-man Carlos Tevez.

In self defence, claims the QPR midfielder, but nevertheless cannot excuse the actions for which Barton incurred a further eight games.

An ill-advised kick out at Sergio Aguero left Barton staring down the tunnel and the prospect of a suspension to fit the crime.

A 12-match ban is probably sufficient considering the nature of the offence, with four of those for his second sending off of the Premier League season - a £75,000 ban accompanied the hefty fixture loss.

Barton will now miss the opening 12 games of the campaign, meaning that nearly a third of the season will pass the QPR skipper by.

Was the punishment justified? - Should it have been more harsh or severe? - Let us know!

Wonder whether you'll try and terminate Barton's contract now? He's on a lot of money for a fairly average player, and has proved a total liability. I'm sure your owners would prefer to sell him, but who is going to buy a player who will miss almost 1/3 of next season?

I think the FA's stance that its better to be a racist than a thug is a little disappointing. Then again I think that's because they got Suarez's punishment wrong.

boxer what racism case are you talking about? Terry or Suarez? If it's Suarez then didn't he have an 8 game ban? Same with Barton but he already had a 4 match ban due to the red card. The Terry situation is totally different, Terry has NOT been proved guilty yet, he will be judged on that when the time comes. My personal opinion is that Barton should of had a bigger ban, i think it's still a good lengthy ban but he won't care with the money he will still have. Love QPR to get rid of him, he is a total disgusting man, he is no better than the street thugs who, murder, rape and beat up defenseless people...He punched a player in the back last season if you remember and gouged a cigar into a teenagers eye...repulsive vile creature who needs to be out the game.

The lad's an idiot to himself and his team, which is a shame as he can be a good player.

Boxer, I have to disagree. I think the stance on racism was fair with the 8 game ban. Joey's 12 match ban is the result 3 different acts of violence getting a 4 match ban for each of them.

Whatever the wrongs of Barton, if the magistrates do convict JT, the FA will be expected to make an example of him, far in excess of what they did with Suarez. After all, in the case of Suarez, the FA only had to go on the balance of probability, a magistrate's court will go to beyond reasonable doubt, a stronger level of proof with the option of a stronger lever of punishment to follow. That said, there is no defending Barton and, hopefully, the club's lawyers will find a way to terminate this thug's contract once and for all!

People keep forgetting - Barton had an automatic ban for his 2nd red card - of 4 games. The other 8 games is for the two violent conduct charges found against him. That's the same as Suarez got for his racist attack on Evra. Saying that - I find it very hard to see why people are comparing a racist attack with an aggressive attack - two very different incidents, neither of which should be condoned but neither of which are comparable, in my opinion.

I don't think I did that. If JT is convicted, I expect, and hope, that the FA hit him with the sort of suspension they dished out to Cantona, otherwise the whole "kickitout" campaign will be shown to be an embarrassment. In the meantime, I still hope that Joey B has played his last game for us. We gave him a chance to resurrect his career and he let us, and himself, down!
