Heidar Poised For Cardiff

HEIDAR Helguson could be another casualty of Rangers' summer spree as Cardiff City have lined up the Icelandic international.

Turn the clock back a couple of seasons ago. Rangers and Cardiff City were vying for their respective ambitions in the npower Championship. Rangers looking to secure promotion while Cardiff - marshaled by Craig Bellamy were eyeing their own top-flight foray.

With the game finely poised at 2-2 a glorious opportunity fell to Heidar Helguson. It was a genuine Paul Gascoigne moment as he failed to make the desired connection and QPR had to delay a promotion party that would have been a suprise given the flow of the fixture.

A season in the Premier League for the striker raised more than a few eyebrows, as he was predominantly injury free and causing problems for the even elite's most stout rearguard. Notably against Chelsea where his excellent performance was crowned with the winning goal from the penalty spot.

An influx timed with an injury to the forward has seen him slip down the pecking order. Bobby Zamora seems to have taken up the mantra of target man with Jay Bothroyd coming in to deputise as necessary in the latter stages of last season.

Despite playing a useful role in an injury free pre-season, Helguson could now be re-united with his former Watford boss and team-mate Malky Mackay as the Bluebirds look to take that final elusive step into the top flight.

It has been suggested that this could pave the way for Cardiff to cool their interest in QPR target Craig Bellamy, reportedly a player of interest to Mark Hughes.
