Media reports coming out of Northern Ireland and mainland Britain suggest Reading FC and QPR are battling it out to capture the signature of Linfield FC 19-year-old winger, Paul Smyth.

I have to admit, on hearing the news I had no option but to run Paul Smyth's name through Google. I mean, who on earth is this chap and why are two Championship clubs supposedly banging in offers like he's the new messiah?

What do we know?

Born on September 10th 1997, Smyth was born and raised in Northern Ireland.

Smyth is contracted to semi-professional Belfast based Linfield FC until the summer of 2019.

Playing position - centre forward.

The official Linfield FC website describes Paul as someone who never gives up and when chances come, he knows where the net is.

Smyth made his senior debut as a late substitute in a County Antrim Shield win over Newington YC back in September 2015.

Talking about his debut in the News Letter publication Smyth was quoted as saying...

'I love it in the Premiership. Defenders have been kicking me up in the air, but I take that as a compliment.

'It maybe shows that they are worried about my pace or something, and that's how they deal with me.

'I don't mind the physical aspect. I just get up and keep going. I actually enjoy it when defenders try and take me down.'

The rising superstar has represented his country for the U19 and U21s. He scored his first goal at international level against Ukraine in a 1-1 draw in 2016.

Recently speaking on the official Irish FA TV about their June European qualifier against Estonia...

The Belfast Telegraph wrote an article about Smyth's possible Linfield departure, which included comments from Chairman Roy McGivern:

'We are all very keen for Paul to progress and I have no doubt he play at a higher level but it remains to be seen whether this is this year or next year. We don't want to stand in anybody's way but the club has to be compensated.

'There is interest and if a club meets our valuation of the player then the club will discuss it, but we're not at this stage yet. No decision has been made on Paul's future.'

If QPR has had one failed bid then I wonder just how much Linfield want?

Ollie Holloway and the clubs negotiating team had better get their skates on if they want to bring Paul over before the transfer window closes.

I wonder if this story has further potential and could Paul become our fourth summer signing?

Come on you R's.
