Vydra Strike Sinks QPR

Derby County

A SOLITARY goal from striker Matej Vydra was enough to see off Queens Park Rangers in a lacklustre Friday night showing.

When this dead-rubber was hauled forward by Sky to a Friday night, it wasn't ever going to be a game that captured the imagination. So it proved with the two sides putting together one of the more tedious Championship encounters you're likely to see this season.

Gary Rowett - sitting in the home dugout for the first time since replacing Steve McClaren - was the model of caution, while Rangers' flair players failed to get a foot-hold on proceedings.

County had spurned a glut of chances, notably from the boot of Johnny Russell, who could in truth have had a hatrick for the Rams - they did however make their second half pressure pay via their record signing.

Forward Matej Vydra has not really set the world alight since joining Derby County in the summer but was on hand to poke home when Tom Ince's shot was parried out by Alex Smithies.

Rangers in truth created little to nothing in a second period devoid of any of their usual enterprise and creativity - they could and should have nicked a point when Idrissa Sylla nodded back off the left-hand upright when well placed.

It was but a footnote in a forgettable Friday night affair in the East Midlands - and we get to do it all again next Friday against Brighton & Hove Albion.
