Chris Barker started his career at non-league Alfreton Town, and after impressing with the Reds was brought to Barnsley by Dave Bassett. In his first season with the Tykes, Barker helped them to a 4th placed finish in Division 1.

After 113 league appearances for Barnsley and 3 goals, Barker made a 600k move to the Welsh capital and Cardiff City. During his time with the Bluebirds, the left-back was loan out briefly to Stoke City, before returning to Ninian Park to be voted player of the year in 2004/05. Falling out of favour with Cardiff, Barker was loaned out to Colchester where an excellent season making 38 starts.

After 159 appearances Barker made the move to Loftus Road under John Gregory on a free transfer, where he made 25 appearances in his first season in W12.

Barker then made an undisclosed move to Plymouth Agyle on 09-08-08 after falling out of favour with new boss Iain Dowie.
