Simon started his career with home town club Leeds United, where his combative midfield style won the hearts of the Leeds faithful. He fell out of favour after a plethora of midfielders were introduced to the side following relegation to the Championship.

Iain Dowie moved to sign the young midfielder for Charlton Athletic for 500k, but due to the untimely nature of his departure, Walton was loaned out firstly to Ipswich Town, where he scored a penalty against the R`s at Loftus Road. This followed a loan spell to Cardiff City in the same season.

At the start of the 2007/08 season, John Gregory signed Walton for 200k having not played a single game for Charlton Athletic. Unfortunately Walton broke his leg in a robust challenge against Fulham in a pre-season friendly victory. His rehabilitation was long, and he was loaned out to Hull City helping them to promotion to the Premier League.

Walton moved on to Plymouth Argyle on 06-08-08.
