Gary started his career at Crystal Palace as he made his debut in Division One against Grimsby Town back in November 2002 at the age of 17.

He made 108 appearances for the Eagles over five years in the first team squad before moving on to pastures new and Coventry City in the summer of 2007, under ex-sky blues and QPR boss Iain Dowie who paid £650,000 for his services. At that particular time the R`s were said to be interested, but were put off by Simon Jordan`s £1.5m price tag.

Since then the 6 ft full back has made 26 appearances for Coventry City in the full back position, before going out on loan at the beginning of the 2008/09 campaign to League One Colchester United. After four good performances the R's snapped up the full back for whom they had admired for a while on an emergency loan deal.

Under Jim Magilton Borrowdale was a permanent fixture in a total football style, but fell out of favour as managerial changes took hold once more. He was loaned out to Charlton Athletic late in 2009 before remaining a fringe player under Neil Warnock.

He played little part in the seasons to follow as his contract winded down, eventually given the elbow in the summer of 2012.
