Gorman's playing career started with Glasgow Celtic before moving on to make 261 appearances for Carlisle United. Later in his career he played alongside QPR legend Rodney Marsh for American outfit, Tampa Bay Rowdies.

The 59-year-old has spent the majority of his coaching career alongside Glenn Hoddle, initially with Swindon Town before an unsuccessful spell in sole charge of the Robins. He assisted Hoddle in one of the biggest jobs in football - the England national team.

After Hoddle`s acrimonious departure he followed him to Southampton and then Tottenham Hotspur. Leaving Spurs Gorman had two spells at Wycombe Wanderers sandwiching a caretaker spell at Gillingham.

Gorman departed his permanent role at Wycombe Wanderers owing to personal reasons owing to the bereavement of his wife. He resurfaced as permanent boss of Northampton Town replacing the outgoing Colin Calderwood.

A bad memory of Loftus Road came as Ray Jones scored the winning goal in a League Cup victory of QPR over Gorman`s Cobblers.

Following his departure from Northampton he took up a chief scout role at struggling Southampton. With George Burley leaving his post at St Mary`s Gorman and Jason Dodd stood in the interim period before leaving upon the appointment of Nigel Pearson.

He joined Jim Magilton in the latter part of 2008 but departed Portman Road along with Magilton in April 2009.

He penned a deal to join QPR on Monday June 15 2009.

He eventually departed alongside boss Jim Magilton after standing by the manager after an alleged fracas with Ákos Buzsáky.

The pair departed on 16-12-09.
