The Sheffield-born winger started managerial life at Gainsborough Trinity and after another brief stint in charge of Burton Albion he took charge of Scarborough.

Here he won the Football Conference title and earned them a place in the Football League - announcing his arrival on the management scene.

After a successful stint with the Seasiders he moved on to Notts County, and back to back promotions - further spells at Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle also yielded promotion.

Brief stints with Oldham and Bury finally saw Warnock join the club of his dreams - boyhood club Sheffield United.

After failing in the playoffs against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Blades were taken up by Warnock as runners up and he realised his dream of managing United in the top flight.

Following a final day defeat at home to Wigan, the Blades were relegated and Warnock decided to step down as Sheffield United manager to take some time out of football.

It wasn't long before the clubs came calling and Crystal Palace managed to entice the experienced boss back into the game. With youngsters at the forefront Warnock assembled a formidable side.

Sean Scannell and Victor Moses were key players as Palace made the playoffs - missing out to Bristol City at the semi-final stage despite a spirited showing at Ashton Gate.

Things at Palace were looking rosey this season until Simon Jordan opted to put the club into administration, and act that saw the Eagles forced to sell key talent Victor Moses to Wigan.

It was this move and more that prompted Warnock to pen a deal with Queens Park Rangers, a club that had sought his signature for some time.

Warnock gained promotion to the Premier League in his first full season with Rangers before a run of two wins in 14 games saw him dismissed by chairman Tony Fernandes.
