Clarke came up through the ranks at home town team Wolverhampton Wanderers before embarking on loan spells at Kidderminster Harriers, Plymouth Argyle and albeit fleetingly, Queens Park Rangers.
The striker was transfer listed and sold to Sheffield Wednesday for a fee believed to be around £300,000 - but was loaned out to Oldham Athletic without making a first team appearance.
His 18 goals in 83 games - culminating in Clarke dislocating his toe during a celebration - was not deemed good enough and he was not offered a new deal at Hillsborough.
Warnock labelled Clarke 'a gamble' as he signed him after the season's close in 2010. This proved to be a failed gambit as Clarke joined Preston North End on loan in January 2011.
After failing to hold down a spot, Clarke joined Swindon Town in the summer of 2011
