New Zealand international captain Ryan Nelsen started off life in his native Christchurch where he played for three years before making the move to the USA in 1998.

He transferred to the nation's capital to play for DC United. He made 81 appearances over four years and alerted then Blackburn boss Mark Hughes.

Hughes signed him up and tied him down to a three-year deal at Ewood Park. After making over 170 appearances and helping the club into Europe, Harry Redknapp signed the New Zealand skipper to sure up Spurs' finish to the campaign.

Nelsen hardly featured in a disastrous conclusion for Spurs as he was released and picked up quickly by Hughes to reunite the pair this time at Loftus Road.

He was instrumental in a mini-revival under Harry Redknapp culminating in a goalless draw at home to champions Manchester City, before leaving to manage Toronto in the MLS midway through the campaign.
