One Day In History - Sheffield United 1992-93

One Day In History - Sheffield United 1992-93
Teams: Sheffield United v Queens Park Rangers.

Date: Saturday 30th January, 1993.

Competition: F.A. Carling Premiership.

Ground: Bramall Lane, Sheffield.

Rangers made the trip to Sheffield, with the Blades placed perilously in the bottom three, and the R`s riding high in seventh in the Premiership.

Following a draw against local rivals Chelsea in a midweek fixture at Loftus Road, courtesy of a goal from Bradley Allen, the R`s were on the up and went to Sheffield in the highest of spirits.

Andy Sinton was once again unavailable owing to a back injury, as Andrew Impey once again started on the right as he did against Chelsea at Loftus Road, as the R`s remained unchanged.

It was QPR making all the early inroads at Bramall Lane with strike partnership Bradley Allen and Les Ferdinand creating and spurning early chances for Rangers. However it wasn`t long before Rangers had the advantage in somewhat fortuitous circumstances.

In direct contrast to their luck in the weeks preceding Rangers held the advantage as Les Ferdinand`s excellent work down the left, saw him switch the ball inside for Ian Holloway, the industrious midfielder let the ball run for Bradley Allen and his effort deflected off Paul Beesley as it flew past Alan Kelly into the bottom left hand corner, a cruel blow for the forlorn Blades.

Both keepers were well worked with Alan Kelly saving well from full back Clive Wilson, with Les Ferdinand sending two drives over from long-range. Whilst at the other end Tony Roberts had to be at his best to deny loanee Chris Kamara, and Welsh midfielder Glyn Hodges. Beasley attempted to make amends for his earlier misfortune sending a thunderous header crashing into the post.

After the break Sheffield United had the impetus with manager Dave Bassett clearly firing up his Blades. Wave after wave of attack with corners a plenty saw the R`s on the back foot for the majority of the half. It was back to the walls stuff as United spurned several chances with Kamara once again in the thick of the action accompanied by Adrian Littlejohn and Carl Bradshaw who also conspired to miss good chances.

Rangers led by Alan McDonald were made of strong stuff and defended valiantly , with Darren Peacock brought on to join the rearguard in place of Clive Wilson as Rangers accommodated a sweeper into their formation. The change did the trick as Rangers broke away to settle the contest as a whole.

Ian Holloway was found down the left with a deft header from a right wing cross, his speculative effort from the left struck Brian Gayle a looped over a forlorn Alan Kelly as Rangers hit the killer blow to United`s hopes. Cheered on by 600 fans from West London, the R`s were ready to take three plucky points from a difficult encounter.

However QPR wouldn`t be QPR without giving their fans a late worry, as Jamie Hoyland slotted home from Glyn Hodges cross in the final stages to give the Blades a glimpse of hope, but Rangers nearly rubbed salt in the wounds with Les Ferdinand a whisker away from adding to the score-line that would ultimately hand the R`s three points in their push for a top four finish.

Perch Thrown To The Wolves

JAMES Perch saw red in the first half as Queens Park Rangers handed Wolverhampton Wanderers their first win under Paul Lambert.

The wing-back had received a let-off last week against Ipswich Town but could have no complaints as he set into motion the chain of events that ultimately saw QPR to their downfall.

After being booked for dissent by card merchant referee Tim Robinson he flew into a stupid challenge, missing the ball entirely and giving the official little alternative but t
