One Day In History - Crystal Palace 1989-90

One Day In History - Crystal Palace 1989-90
Teams: Crystal Palace v Queens Park Rangers

Date: Saturday 2nd December, 1989

Competition: Barclays League Division One

Venue: Selhurst Park, London.

Don Howe`s men had suffered only one defeat in five going into the encounter, the aforementioned 3-0 defeat away at Highbury. A narrow 3-2 win at home to Liverpool boosted spirits at Loftus Road after the sacking of Trevor Francis.

Another catalyst for change was the signing of midfielder Ray Wilkins from Glasgow Rangers. Still hailed as one of Rangers best deals to date, Wilkins was signed on a free transfer from the Scottish giants.

The game came off the back of a 0-0 draw with Millwall, where if you look back at your programmes you will see the brother of this writer at the tender age of nine.

Crystal Palace were having a torrid start to the campaign losing 9-0 to Liverpool at Anfield before getting thumped 5-0 in the League Cup against Nottingham Forest. The Eagles were without a win in nine games, the last win coming in a seven goal thriller, a 4-3 win over local rivals Millwall.

Not generally a happy hunting ground for QPR, Rangers secured their eighth victory since the first meeting back in 1920. The win was secured courtesy of Andy Sinton`s brace, with Danny Maddix also contributing a goal in an excellent victory.

The R`s showed tremendous character to come through the encounter with a clean sheet on a crisp foggy afternoon in south London. That secured Rangers back to back wins at Selhurst Park, but they have failed to win there ever since.

The Eagles finished 15th with 48 points, with Rangers finishing a respectable 11th with 48 points, following a turbulent beginning in W12.

Final Score: Crystal Palace 0-3 Queens Park Rangers

Attendance: 12,784

Crystal Palace: Martyn, Pemberton, Dennis, Gray, Hopkins, Barber, McGoldrick, Thomas, Bright, Wright, Pardew.

QPR: Roberts, Bardsley, Sansom, Parker, McDonald, Maddix, Wilkins, Reid, Falco, Ferdinand (Clarke), Sinton.
