One Day In History - Peterborough United 1966-67

Rangers travelled to Peterborough as league leaders as they searched for a win to propel their position at the summit.

Teams: Peterborough United v Queens Park Rangers

Date: Monday February 20, 1967

Competition: Football League Third Division

Venue: London Road, Peterborough

The R's were looking a sound bet for promotion as they travelled to mid-table Peterborough United in a bid to assert their position at the table's summit.

Stock's men had only lost twice all season to date, but came into the fixture off the back of three successive draws - searching for a timely boost to clear them of the chasing pack once more.

Draws away at Doncaster Rovers (1-1) and Grimsby Town (1-1) were tempered with a disappointing home point against Mansfield Town (0-0).

A victory at London Road would go a long way to deciding the destination of the Third Division title, as if Rangers could rediscover their rampant form the championship would be a formality.

Peterborough were languishing in the bottom half of the table under Gordon Clark, and despite some useful home form - it was away from London Road that the Posh suffered.

The hosts had won three of their last four games on home soil with wins over Mansfield Town (3-1), Walsall (2-1) and Brighton (2-1) helping bolster their position away from the danger-zone.

Stock made one change to the side that drew away at Grimsby with Keith Sanderson coming back into the side at the expense of Ian Morgan.

In front of a crowd of just over 6,000 Rangers had the lead courtesy of a stroke of luck - an own goal from winger Ian Crawford set them on their way at London Road.

The lead was soon doubled when Mark Lazarus hit his seventh goal of the campaign and thus condemning Peterborough to defeat.

Rangers marched on from thereon in losing only three more games finishing 12 points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough.

The R's cantered to promotion in what has been hailed as one of the greatest seasons in the club's history, doing the double by beating First Division West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup.

Peterborough meanwhile secured a 15th placed finish, with Gordon Clark departing soon afterwards. His replacement was Norman Rigby before Posh were relegated for financial irregularities.

Final Score: Peterborough United 0-2 Queens Park Rangers

Attendance: 6,410

Queens Park Rangers: Springett, Hazell, Langley, Keen, Hunt, Sibley, Lazarus, Sanderson, Allen, Marsh, Morgan R.
